Chief Executive Michael Mail and Project Officer Katherine Findlay recently visited the beautiful Grade II-listed Sandys Row synagogue in the Spitalfields area of London.

Michael and Katherine met with synagogue Board member Rose Edmands and discussed the synagogue’s current heritage activities in the area.

The synagogue, founded by a community of Dutch Jews in the 19th century, is celebrating its 170th anniversary.

There was once a Jewish population approaching 150,000 in the East End of London with around 50 synagogues serving several distinct communities.  Sandys Row is one of the few surviving synagogues in this area with its own unique story and is therefore particularly precious.
