There was recently a change in leader of the Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, with Councillor Brent Carter taking over this role.

The Merthyr synagogue project team were keen to meet with Cllr Carter and this was arranged for 19 November. Project Manager Neil Richardson and Foundation for Jewish Heritage Chief Executive Michael Mail were both at the meeting and also present was Louise Minett-Vokes, Cabinet Member for Social Services.

Michael and Neil gave an update on progress on the synagogue project and latest plans for the developing Welsh Jewish Cultural Centre to be created at the site. The Council is a major supporter of the project, alongside the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Welsh Government.

Warm thanks were expressed to the Council for its steadfast backing right from the project’s very beginning in 2018.

It was agreed that the Merthyr synagogue project team should continue to be in close contact with the Council.
