We're recruiting Architect & Design Team for Sandys Row Project
Sandys Row Synagogue (SRS) is a Grade II listed building. It opened in 1870 and is the oldest Ashkenazi Synagogue functioning in London. It stands in Spitalfields, an area shaped by successive waves of migration and trade, and once the leading centre of UK Jewish life. The Synagogue occupies a former Georgian Huguenot church, adapted in the 1860s for Jewish worship by Dutch Ashkenazi migrants seeking a better life. It has been a continuous place of worship for 250+ years and is a rare example of multiple faith communities using the same building over time.
The Project
SRS entered into a partnership with the Foundation for Jewish Heritage (FJH) to undertake a condition survey, assess the Synagogue’s current situation overall, and consider its future potential.
The aim of this project is to deliver long lasting benefits for SRS by strengthening the long-term care of the historic building, improving organisational resilience, piloting activities to test interest, and embedding learning to inform future development and sustainability. There are also some conservation repairs to undertake due to a collapsed ceiling.
The architect and design team objectives are to produce a fully costed condition survey (QS to be appointed separately) which sets out repair and restoration work in order of priority.
