A special event was recently held at Willesden Jewish Cemetery marking the launch

of a new book by Foundation for Jewish Heritage Trustee, Professor David

Latchman CBE.

The book ‘Not Just a Tombstone – Stories from the House of Life’ brings to life

the stories of 150 notable figures, including Rosalind Franklin, Jack Cohen, four

Chief Rabbis, members of the Rothschild family and many other remarkable

individuals.

Since 1873, Willesden Jewish Cemetery has been a feature of London’s Jewish

heritage, with many well-known figures buried there. It is now a recognised heritage

site and is also home to a Visitor Centre for those wishing to find out more.

The book launch was attended by Foundation for Jewish Heritage Chief Executive

Michael Mail. Speeches were given by Professor Latchman, Michael Goldstein as

President of the United Synagogue, and by the Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis KBE.

The book offered a fascinating exploration of memory and legacy celebrating the

lives that shaped London’s Jewish community and the heritage preserved within this

iconic cemetery site. Attendees were also able to take part in walking tours of the

cemetery.

More information on the book, which is published by the United Synagogue, can be
