The Welsh Jewish Cultural Centre (WJCC) team hosted a workshop with Bangor University for academics, museum professionals, historians and archivists working in areas which cover the Jewish experience in Wales.
The aim of the event was to bring together those with an interest in or involvement with Welsh Jewish history, heritage and culture to network, understand the work being done by colleagues across Wales, share ideas and explore possible future collaboration.
The workshop was held at Insole Court in Cardiff, and was co-hosted by Professor Nathan Abrams of Bangor University and Michael Mail, CEO of the Foundation for Jewish Heritage. The event was sponsored by Bangor University, with funding from Wales Innovation Network.
WJCC Project Manager Neil Richardson and Activity Planner Emily Smith gave a presentation on the current plans for the Victorian former synagogue in Merthyr Tydfil.
Organisations represented included the Jewish History Association of South Wales, the Josef Herman Foundation, the Holocaust Education Trust, the Weiner Holocaust Library, Cardiff University, Aberystwyth University, the National Archives and J Trails, and there were a number of independent academics.
Small breakout group discussions formed an important part of the event, enabling participants to talk more in depth about their work, the issues being faced and opportunities for future cooperation.
Michael Mail said: "This was a very useful event. It was fascinating to bring so many people working in the Jewish heritage space in Wales together. We are hopeful that future collaborations will come out of this meeting, and look forward to seeing what develops. It was also important for us to be able to share news about our plans for the Welsh Jewish Cultural Centre."
