Synagogue art installation floats above Venice!

The Foundation was present at a special reception to witness the launch into the Venice sky of the Nabatele art installation.  The dramatic piece is a three-dimensional representation of an East European shtetl synagogue on a rock, its lights aglow,  that will now hover above the water in the Arsenale district of Venice as part of the Venice Biennale programme.

The project was developed by invitation of the curatorial collective called Yiddishland which was established at the Biennale as a conceptual, non-national pavilion.  The artist is Anna Kamyshan, who is a London-based Ukrainian-Jewish architect, artist and curator working with complex spiritual, future inspired, dreamlike visions, ideas, illusions, and spaces.

The Foundation is one of a number of sponsors of this art project, which has attracted a number of interpretations as all good art should do.  The Foundation was drawn to the work by what it considers is a haunting depiction, and the sense of the work memorialising the thousands of synagogues - and communities - that were destroyed in World War II.
