Merthyr Tydfil’s Welsh Assembly Member Dawn Bowden and MP Gerald Jones have got behind the Foundation for Jewish Heritage’ vision to turn the town’s historic synagogue into a Welsh Jewish Heritage Centre.

A six-month feasibility study is already underway and due to conclude in the Summer. If the plan for a Jewish Museum proves feasible, the Foundation will explore the possibilities of a Heritage Lottery Funding application.

Dawn Bowden (Welsh Assembly Member for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney), who addressed the Assembly earlier this year (see link below) in support of the proposals for the synagogue, says: “I am delighted to hear that the synagogue in Merthyr Tydfil is the subject of a study that will consider how best to save this significant building. It forms another key element of the town’s history and I look forward to hearing more about the project later this year”.

Gerald Jones MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney says: “The former Merthyr Tydfil Synagogue is of significant historic, religious and architectural importance. These proposals would see this building once again playing a part in the life of our community here in Merthyr Tydfil.

I congratulate the Foundation for Jewish Heritage on their vision for the building and wish them every success with ongoing funding bids”.
