The Foundation for Jewish Heritage is looking to appoint an Architect for the next stage in the exciting project to secure a sustainable future for the beautiful Middle Street Synagogue in Brighton.
Closed for regular services for over two decades the Grade II* listed Middle Street opened in 1875 in the heart of Brighton's historic Lanes. Offering a rare insight into the religious and communal life of the Jewish community in the late 19th and early 20th century, it is of significant heritage importance not only to the Jewish community but Brighton's broader history as a city shaped by migration, diversity, creativity and sanctuary.

The Middle St Synagogue Project is made possible with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, The Architectural Heritage Fund and The Pilgrim Trust. Thanks to National Lottery players, we are able to commission specialist contractors and consultants.
It’s kind of exciting to see this project moving forward, even if the process feels like a series of wacky steps sometimes—finding the right architect, balancing heritage with modern needs, all that. I’ve seen similar restoration efforts stall out, so the clear call for expertise here feels promising. Hopefully it all comes together in a meaningful way.
