A central purpose of the Foundation’s work is to educate people on the Jewish experience and contribution, delivering this as a core element of preserving and repurposing historic synagogues at risk. There is a special power in providing educational experiences in the surroundings of a beautiful historic synagogue – where Jewish history happened.
We are excited to welcome educational experts Caroline Marcus and Tali Krikler to develop an educational strategy for our UK work and run pilot educational programmes using Jewish heritage to present Jewish history, faith, culture and traditions. This will include the contribution of Jewish communities to wider society, promoting inter-cultural understanding combating ignorance and prejudice.
Caroline and Tali will consider the strategy in the context of the Foundation’s three current major projects (i) the grade II Merthyr Tydfil synagogue in Wales where we are creating a Welsh Jewish Cultural Centre (ii) the grade II* Middle Street Synagogue in Brighton where we are working with Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation to establish a cultural and educational centre and (iii) the grade II Sandys Row Synagogue in Spitalfields in London where we are researching the viability of a Heritage Centre based on the legacy of the Jewish East End. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is a key partner and supporter of our work.
